Assessmentschild reading

The Miles Dyslexia Centre team of highly trained specialist assessors and educational psychologists provide a wide range of assessments for both adults and children.

Our assessors and educational psychologists are qualified to advise and screen and/or
assess for Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD). All hold current registration with relevant
professional bodies (e.g., HCPC, PATOSS, BDA), and practising certificates to assess and write specialist reports.

The complete assessment procedure, including testing and discussion, takes between two to four hours and you will receive a full detailed written report with recommendations and details of the performance within four working weeks.

The purpose of an assessment is to gain a clear profile of the individual’s strengths and weaknesses and their individual cognitive abilities.

We offer the following assessments at the Centre;

Access Arrangements Assessments

The Miles Dyslexia Centre has a team of highly experienced, qualified assessors: We can offer access arrangement assessments for young people between the ages of 14 and 16.

An access arrangements assessment can be carried out for pupils from Year 9 onwards who wish to be considered for examination adjustment for GCSEs, and A levels. Our assessors will advise on relevant and appropriate access arrangements; however, the school has responsibility for the administration of access arrangements and application to the awarding body – and discussion with school is necessary.

  • A Joint Council of Qualifications (JCQ) Form 8 can be part-completed with applicable test scores.
  • Recommendations for access arrangements in exams can be made.
  • A short report will be provided containing a summary of cognitive strengths and weakness, along with a table of test results and any further recommendations.
  • Our team can offer advice regarding the process.

Our specialist assessors holds AMBDA Assessment Practising Certificate (APC) and PATOSS or BDA Practising Certificates. For further information or to book an assessment please contact us on 01248 382203/383618 or email dyslex-admin@bangor.ac.uk

Educational Psychological Assessment

The Miles Dyslexia Centre works with a team of very experienced, qualified Educational Psychologists who have background experience of working in LEAs. We can offer full assessments for both adults and children from the age of 7.

An assessment can help to determine whether an individual has dyslexia, or any other SpLD. The assessment itself provides a full cognitive ability profile, and involves a range of individual assessments including verbal, non-verbal, numeracy and literacy tasks which, when taken together, may indicate the presence of Dyslexia or other SpLDs (specific learning difficulties).

  • A diagnosis can be used to ensure that appropriate reasonable adjustments for support in education, or in the workplace, are put into place.
  • It can also be extremely important for self-confidence and emotional well being.
  • The assessments can be offered bilingually.

Our Educational Psychologists are registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and hold current practising Certificates, they are also members of the Association of Education Psychologists (AEP).

An assessment is to determine whether an individual has dyslexia or any other SpLD. The assessment involves a series of cognitive and literacy tests to identify dyslexia and any other SpLD specific learning difficulty.

  • A diagnosis can be useful in order to make appropriate reasonable adjustments for support in education or in the workplace.
  • Higher education students can apply for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA).
  • Open University students are entitled to reasonable adjustment to support their study.
  • Working adults may be eligible for support under the government’s Access to Work scheme.

Literacy Skills Assessment

The Miles Dyslexia Centre has a team of very experienced, qualified assessors: We can offer literacy skills assessments for children/adults of all ages.

A literacy skills assessment is not a diagnosis of dyslexia or any other SpLD but will determine areas of strength and weakness in an individual’s literacy abilities. The assessment includes a range of skills associated with literacy, not just reading, spelling and writing; based on this a comprehensive report is written.

For children: A range of specific recommendations will be given and suggestions for how best to support the child within school and home.
For other age groups: Recommendations will address the individual’s needs in the home/workplace and how adjustments can be made.
Helpful links, suggestions for literacy aids and IT support, are included.

A numeracy skills assessment is not a diagnosis of dyscalculia but will determine areas of numerical strength and weakness in young children. The assessment is carried out as two separate tests and will involve formal and informal knowledge of numeracy skills.

  • A full report is written detailing the results of the assessment.
  • A range of comprehensive recommendations will be given, including guidance on how best to support the child within school and home.

Screening Test

The Miles Dyslexia Centre has a team of very experienced, qualified assessors: We carry out screening tests for adults.

A screening test is not a diagnosis of dyslexia, its intended to give an indication of possible SpLD difficulties. The assessment involves discussion (to gather background information) and a number of short tests. A screening test will give a profile picture of strengths and weaknesses.

  • A follow up HEARTS assessment may be recommended to determine the nature of difficulties especially if a formal diagnosis is needed for education or the work-place.
  • Our team can offer advice regarding the process.

Our specialist assessors holds AMBDA Assessment Practising Certificate (APC) and PATOSS or BDA Practising Certificates.

STARs (Specialist Teacher Assessments and Reporting)

The Miles Dyslexia Centre has a team of very experienced, qualified assessors: STARs (Specialist Teacher Assessments and Reporting). We can offer assessments for young people between the ages of 11 and 16.

An assessment will look at the possibility of dyslexia and may explore on other issues within the spectrum of specific learning difficulties (e.g. dyspraxia). The assessment will involve a range of tests in cognitive and literacy ability.

An Educational Psychologist’s assessment is preferable for younger children (primary school) and those with more complex needs.
Children in early secondary school may be advised to wait until closer to exam time as they may need a re-assessment for exams. However, earlier assessment can build up a “history of need” and inform parents and school.

A Workplace Needs Assessment can be used to identify the reasonable adjustments an employee, with dyslexia or any other SpLD (specific learning difficulties) may require, ensuring that they are able to fulfil their job role to the best of their abilities. This is a requirement under the 2010 Equality Act. The assessment involves an in-depth discussion with our assessor, considering the specific job role and working environment of the employee and the difficulties involved as a result of their SpLD. A small number of recognised assessments will also be completed to provide evidence of weaknesses that may impact negatively on the employee’s work life. The assessment will provide:

  • A full detailed report with practical recommendations and suggestions that can be implemented in the workplace.
