Our service offers:

  • Pre-assessment screening: informal preliminary screening and discussion for students who think they might be dyslexic, followed by advice on how to proceed
  • Psychometric assessment
  • Study needs assessments for the Disabled Students’ Allowance (for external students as well as Bangor students)
  • Personal and academic support and guidance
  • One-to-one tuition in study skills (e.g. essay structure and revision skills); this can be arranged in English or Welsh special tutors available for Statistics/Maths, Chemistry
  • Dyslexic students study support groups
  • Students with dyslexia may register with us when they arrive at Bangor, and are then supported by us in conjunction with their departments. We keep in touch through meetings, newsletters, e-mail and phone

Other support includes:

  • Liaison with the LEA and help with obtaining equipment
  • Guidance on examination provision
  • Obtaining library provisions
  • Provision of materials and equipment (books, tape recorders, dictaphones etc.) We have a computer room within the Unit specifically available to students with dyslexia
  • Liaison on the student's behalf, if necessary, with members of staff in their departments
  • Study groups for dyslexic students during term-time. The programme includes dyslexia awareness, looking at dyslexic strengths and ways of learning, dyslexia-related study skills, assertion and stress management. There is time for students to get together, have a cup of coffee and pool ideas. This group has proved a very valuable support for many students
  • University candidates with dyslexia are invited to get in touch with the Student Tutor before applying and to visit the Unit if they come for an Open Day at Bangor
